Understanding your pain

What is knee pain?

The knee is one of the most heavily used joints in the human body. Comprising the femur, tibia, patella, ligaments, menisci and tendons, it bears virtually the entire weight of the body with every step taken. This daily biomechanical stress makes the knee a particularly vulnerable joint to injury and pain.

Gonalgia – the medical term for knee pain – can appear suddenly following a fall, wrong movement or direct impact. It can also develop gradually as a result of overuse, muscle imbalance or age-related degenerative changes.

Whatever the nature or origin of your pain, Physio Plateau physiotherapists are trained to identify the affected structure and develop an effective treatment plan based on the best current scientific evidence.

25%

of adults suffer from knee pain at some point in their lives

#1

Knee pain is the most common musculoskeletal complaint in physiotherapy

80%

of cases can be significantly alleviated without surgery thanks to physiotherapy

Pathologies treated

The main knee conditions

Our physiotherapists are trained to assess and treat the full range of knee pathologies. Here are the most frequently encountered conditions.

VERY FREQUENT

PATELLOFEMORAL SYNDROME (PFS)

The most commonly treated knee injury in physiotherapy. Pain below or around the kneecap, aggravated by stair climbing, prolonged sitting or squatting. Common in runners, cyclists and adolescents. Treatment targets muscle imbalances and movement biomechanics.

TRAUMATIC

SPRAIN AND LIGAMENT INJURY

Damage to the ACL, PCL or collateral ligaments during pivoting, impact or jump landing. Severity ranges from grade I (elongation) to grade III (complete rupture). Physiotherapy restores knee stability, strength and proprioception, with or without surgery.

DEGENERATIVE

OSTEOARTHRITIS OF THE KNEE (GONARTHROSIS)

Progressive degeneration of articular cartilage, leading to mechanical pain, morning stiffness and loss of mobility. Although irreversible, its symptoms can be considerably reduced. Muscle strengthening, manual therapy and therapeutic education are at the heart of the treatment.

TRAUMATIC / SPORT

MENISCUS LESION

Tearing of one of the two menisci during a twisting movement or as a result of degeneration. Localized pain inside or outside the knee, sometimes accompanied by locking or effusion. Physiotherapy optimizes results, with or without surgery.

SPORT / OVERLOAD

PATELLAR TENDINOPATHY

Also known as “jumper’s knee”, it affects the tendon connecting the patella to the tibia. Very common in basketball, volleyball and CrossFit. Pain localized under the patella, aggravated by activity. Treatment is based on a structured progression of loads and targeted eccentric exercises.

RACING / CYCLING

ILIOTIBIAL BAND SYNDROME

Second most common injury among runners. Sharp pain on the outer side of the knee, typically on downhill runs or after a certain running distance. Biomechanical correction of the stride and strengthening of the hip abductors are essential to treatment.

POST-OPERATIVE

POST-SURGICAL REHABILITATION

ACL reconstruction, meniscectomy, total knee arthroplasty (TKA) – post-operative physiotherapy is essential for regaining full mobility, strength and stability. It reduces pain, prevents complications and speeds up the return to activity.

YOUNG ATHLETES

DISLOCATION OF PATELLA

Common condition in teenagers and young adults who play sports involving jumping, pivoting and contact. Pain and swelling around the patella. Physiotherapy helps manage swelling, reduce pain and restore mobility and function.

INTERNAL PAIN

PES ANSERINUS TENDINITIS

Irritation of tendons on the inside of the tibia, particularly affecting cyclists and overweight people. Pain on the medial side of the knee, aggravated by repetitive bending movements.

When to consult?

Recognizing symptoms that require consultation

Don’t let the pain set in. The earlier treatment is initiated, the better and faster the recovery.

  • PERSISTENT PAIN

Pain lasting more than 3 days or recurring regularly after activity.

  • KNEE SWELLING

Visible effusion or swelling, a sign of active joint inflammation.

  • BLOCKING OR INSTABILITY

Sensation that the knee is “loose” or locked during daily movements.

  • LOSS OF MOBILITY

Difficulty bending or fully extending the knee, morning stiffness.

  • LIMP

A change in the way you walk to compensate for the pain.

  • PAINFUL CREPITATIONS

Snapping or cracking accompanied by pain when moving the knee.

  • ACTIVITY LIMITATION

Inability to run, climb stairs or squat without pain.

  • NOCTURNAL PAIN

Pain that wakes you up at night or when you wake up in the morning.

Our approach

How we treat your knee pain

At Physio Plateau, we believe that every patient has his or her own unique way of moving. Our approach is based on a thorough evaluation before any treatment.

Complete biomechanical assessment

Your first session is entirely devoted to assessment. Your physiotherapist analyzes your posture, range of motion, muscle strength and functional movements (walking, going down stairs, squatting) to precisely identify the affected structure and contributing factors.

Physiotherapy diagnosis & explanation

On the basis of the examination, your physiotherapist will make a physiotherapy diagnosis, clearly explaining the origin of your pain and presenting you with treatment goals and the number of sessions you can expect for your recovery.

Customized treatment

Modalities are chosen according to your condition: orthopedic manual therapy, myofascial release, muscle energy techniques, nerve mobilization, taping and targeted therapeutic exercises.

Home exercise program

A personalized exercise program, accessible via our online tool, complements the in-clinic sessions. Strengthening of quadriceps, hamstrings and gluteal muscles, targeted stretching, proprioceptive work – everything is adapted to your level and your goals.

Gradual return to activity

We support you until you have fully returned to your sporting or professional activities, adjusting the load week by week. The aim: a lasting recovery that prevents relapses.

Prepare your visit

To consider before the first session

The treatment of knee pain is based on a personalized approach aimed at treating the cause of the problem, not just the symptoms.

  • Wear clothing that allows free movement and exposes the knee and thigh (shorts recommended).
  • Prepare a summary of your injury history, treatments received and available medical imaging (X-rays, MRIs).
  • Bring a list of your current medications.
  • If you practice a specific sport, please mention it: we’ll adjust the evaluation to your sporting gestures.
  • If you have a knee brace or orthosis, bring it with you to the assessment.

Each treatment plan is tailored to your reality, whether your goal is a return to sport or simply everyday comfort.
