Why consult?

Physiotherapy, your best ally

Calf, ankle and foot pain is common and can quickly limit walking, sports, work or daily activities.

This pain does not always come solely from the painful area. It may be related to reduced mobility, muscle weakness, training overload, a previous sprain that was not properly rehabilitated, or a biomechanical imbalance higher up the chain, notably at the knee, hip or pelvis.

At Physio Plateau, our Plateau Mont-Royal physiotherapists assess all of your movements—from the pelvis to the foot—to identify the true cause of your pain and build a personalized treatment plan.

Early care helps reduce pain, restore better function and prevent recurrence, particularly with ankle sprains, Achilles tendon pain and plantar pain.

Our areas of expertise

Calf,
ankle and foot conditions we treat

Our physiotherapists treat many musculoskeletal conditions affecting the calf, ankle and foot. The goal: reduce pain, restore mobility and help you return to your activities with confidence.

VERY FREQUENT

ANKLE SPRAIN

Pain, swelling and instability after a misstep, a fall or an ankle twist. Comprehensive rehabilitation is important to restore stability, strengthen stabilizing muscles and reduce the risk of recurrence.

PLANTAR PAIN

PLANTAR FASCIITIS

Pain under the heel or under the arch of the foot, often more intense upon getting up or after a period of rest. Treatment aims to reduce irritation, improve mobility, adjust loading and strengthen the structures of the foot.

ACHILLES TENDON

ACHILLES TENDINOPATHY

Pain or stiffness in the Achilles tendon, often related to running, jumping, an overly rapid increase in training, or repetitive overload. Physiotherapy focuses in particular on a gradual progression of exercises and load.

SPORT / OVERLOAD

CALF STRAIN AND ACHILLES TENDON TEAR

Sharp pain in the calf or Achilles tendon during a sprint, a change of direction or an explosive push-off. Treatment helps promote healing, restore strength and prepare for a gradual return to activity.

BUNION

HALLUX VALGUS

Hallux valgus, also called a “bunion,” is a deformity of the big toe that can cause pain, inflammation and discomfort when walking. Physiotherapy can help reduce symptoms, improve foot mobility and optimize walking mechanics to reduce stress on the joint.

INSTABILITY

CHRONIC ANKLE INSTABILITY

A feeling that the ankle “gives way,” repeated sprains, or lack of confidence on uneven ground. Treatment targets proprioception, strength, balance and dynamic ankle control.

FOREFOOT

METATARSALGIA

Pain under the forefoot, often felt during prolonged walking, running or with certain types of shoes. The assessment helps identify the pressure, mobility or overload factors involved.

NERVE COMPRESSION

TARSAL TUNNEL SYNDROME

Pain, burning, numbness or tingling under the foot or around the ankle. Physiotherapy can help improve mobility, reduce mechanical irritation and optimize foot function.

SHIN PAIN

SHIN SPLINTS

Medial tibial stress syndrome (shin splints) is an inflammation of the tissues surrounding the tibia bone, often caused by running, repeated impact or training overload. Physiotherapy helps reduce pain, correct biomechanical imbalances and support a gradual return to sports activities.

When to consult?

Recognizing symptoms that require consultation

Foot, ankle or calf pain that persists or returns regularly warrants an assessment. The earlier the issue is addressed, the easier the return to activities generally is.

  • PAIN WHEN WALKING

Pain that appears when walking, going up stairs or after a prolonged period of standing.

  • PAIN UPON GETTING UP

Pain under the heel or foot during the first steps in the morning, often associated with plantar irritation.

  • ANKLE SWELLING

Swelling after a sprain, exertion or an active day, sometimes accompanied by a loss of mobility.

  • INSTABILITY

A feeling that the ankle lacks stability, especially on uneven ground or during changes of direction.

  • CALF & FOOT STIFFNESS

Persistent tightness, cramps, stiffness or difficulty pushing off with the foot when walking or running.

  • ACHILLES TENDON PAIN

Pain behind the ankle or at the lower calf, often present at the start of activity or after exertion.

  • DIFFICULTY RISING ONTO YOUR TOES

Loss of strength or pain when you try to rise onto the ball of your foot.

  • NUMBNESS/BURNING

Loss of sensation, tingling, or electric-shock sensations in the leg or foot that limit your daily activities.

Our approach

A rigorous 5-step clinical process

At Physio Plateau, each patient benefits from structured follow-up, based on a comprehensive assessment and tailored to their goals: walking without pain, returning to sport or preventing recurrence.

Complete biomechanical assessment

The first session allows us to analyze the history of your pain, its location, your activities, your mobility, your strength, your balance, and your walking or running pattern. The examination may include the foot, ankle, calf, knee, hip and pelvis to understand the entire movement chain.

Physiotherapy diagnosis & explanation

Your physiotherapist clearly explains the structures involved, the factors maintaining the pain and the recovery steps. Understanding your condition helps you better manage your activities and progress with confidence.

Personalized treatment program

A tailored treatment plan is established based on your condition, your tolerance to exertion and your goals. It may include mobility exercises, strengthening, motor control, balance and a gradual progression of activities.

Active and manual treatment in the clinic

Sessions combine targeted manual techniques, active exercises, education and load-management advice. Your physiotherapist adjusts treatment based on your response and progress.

Return to activities and prevention

The final phase aims to prepare your calf, ankle and foot for the real demands of your activities: walking, stairs, work, running, sports or leisure. You leave with practical tools to maintain your gains and reduce the risk of recurrence.

Prepare your visit

To consider before your first visit

Treatment for calf, ankle and foot pain is based on a personalized approach aimed at addressing the cause of the problem, not only the symptoms.

  • Wear clothing that allows you to move freely and exposes the lower limb (shorts);
  • Bring your walking, running or sports shoes if they are related to your pain.
  • Bring your imaging results, medical reports or information on previous treatments, if available.
  • Prepare the activities you wish to resume: walking, running, sports, standing work or leisure.
  • If you have foot orthotics or insoles, bring them to the assessment.

Each treatment plan is tailored to your reality, whether your goal is a return to daily function or a return to sport.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you want to know - Physio: foot, calf and ankle

Can physiotherapy treat plantar fasciitis?

Yes. Physiotherapy can help reduce pain, improve mobility, strengthen the structures of the foot and correct the factors that contribute to overload. Treatment is tailored to your symptoms, your footwear, your activities and your tolerance for walking.

How long does it take to recover from an ankle sprain?

The timeline varies depending on the severity of the sprain, the presence of swelling, ankle stability and your goals. A mild sprain may progress quickly, while a more significant sprain requires more structured rehabilitation to restore strength, balance and confidence.

Should I stop walking if I have foot pain?

Not necessarily. It is often necessary to adjust the amount of walking, pace, footwear or surfaces rather than stopping altogether. Your physiotherapist will help you find the right activity level to keep moving without perpetuating the pain.

How much does a physiotherapy consultation cost?

The cost of a physiotherapy consultation may vary depending on the clinic and the type of treatment. Physio Plateau’s rates are available in the“Book an appointment” section of the online booking form. Most private insurances cover part or all of the cost. You can check with a clinic in your area, such as Plateau Mont-Royal or Rosemont. Call us at 514-277-8954

When should I consult for calf pain?

It is recommended to consult if the pain persists, returns with exertion, limits walking or running, or appears after a sudden movement. An assessment helps distinguish overload, a strain, a tear, or an issue related to the ankle or Achilles tendon.

Are orthotic insoles always necessary?

No. Insoles can be helpful in some cases, but they do not replace strengthening, mobility, education and load management. Your physiotherapist will assess whether they are appropriate based on your condition and how you move.

Can I run with Achilles tendon pain?

It depends on the intensity of the pain, how it responds after exertion and your training level. In many cases, running can be temporarily modified rather than stopped completely. However, progression must be supervised to avoid worsening the tendinopathy.

Consult us quickly if...

  • You cannot place your foot on the ground after a fall or direct impact

  • Your calf, your ankle or your foot is very swollen, warm, or has a visible deformity

  • You feel a sensation of slippage or significant instability

  • Pain is present at night or at rest with no obvious mechanical cause

  • Symptoms persist despite several weeks’ rest
